Checking her watch every few minutes, Dawn found it hard to concentrate at work when the only thing her mind could focus on was Jack’s horrified expression when she told him at breakfast that his father would be picking him up from school.

He tried to bargain his way out of the hated obligation, and though she wanted to pull the plug and save him the grief, the voice of the advocate-counselor assigned to them in family court came back to her.

She wasn’t to speak badly of her co-parent and should never stand in the way of a lawful visit.

Co-parent. What a fucking joke. If Allen were a real co-parent, he wouldn’t ignore Nicole even though he did so with the court’s short-sighted permission and he would grow the hell up and stop treating Jack like a nuisance. How come the damn system felt stacked judgmentally against the custodial moms and was so lenient for the reluctant dads? Who the hell made up the rules because, honest to god, they sucked.

Jade was picking up Nicole and would watch her while Jack was out with his father. King was supposed to take over once Jack was home. The babysitting puzzle she faced wasn’t ideal, but then what was?

“I need another energy drink,” a tired voice muttered.

Dawn leaned on her elbow with her head on her hand and looked at her co-worker Rasheda. “Those drinks make you nuts, and we all keep telling you that crap is eating a hole in your stomach.”

“It’s the price of working three jobs.”

The girl had a point. Dawn sat up and arched. When her chin tilted and her back cracked, she let out a sigh. Looking at Rasheda, she drawled, “What we really need is a vacation and day spa privileges.”

“I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I’ve been working since I was fifteen.”

“Are you and Walt still going to do a food truck?”

“Hell, yes. That’s what I’m working for! But not here. The city is ridiculously corrupt, so getting a vendor license can take years.”

Dawn laughed. Corruption and shady dealings were birds of a feather. Skating the system was practically an art form when it came to dealing fairly with kids and families. It wasn’t a surprise to learn that the bullshit extended everywhere.

“Hey. What about you? Isn’t the semester rolling to a close? You getting that degree?”

“The degree is in the bag,” she explained. “What’s left is the razzle-dazzle. The piece of paper isn’t enough. I need to blow minds here at the finish. Employers will focus on this last semester. Big time stress.”

Rasheda handed off a handful of Hershey’s Kisses. “You got this. Nobody who works as hard as you should worry.”

The little chocolate drops went down easy while they bullshitted about a show they had both watched on Netflix. The kisses plus the half bag of Skittles she consumed over two days was sure to go straight to her hips. Sweeping the little pile of silver foil into her hand, Dawn got rid of the evidence and stood.
